Until the 1800’s, prairies and savannas covered most of Southern Wisconsin. Prairies of native plants, oak savannahs, conifer forests of northern Wisconsin, and healthy wetlands compose more than 1200 acres open to the public for recreation and education.

Madison’s Lost World. Peace and serenity combined with enormous convenience inspired the Lake Forest Company to propose an aggressive development north of Harlan Hills in the heart of the Arboretum in 1916. Nature reclaimed the land and the remnants, foundations, roads, sidewalks, of the failed plan are visible today in the Lost World Forest near the Visitors Center.

In the 21st Century, Harlan Hills Condominiums could be considered the community fulfilling the vision of 100 year old planners.
